PG 500: O. J. Riley, a prominent grocer of Harvard, Neb., and a substantial and influential citizen of that place, was born in Bradford County, Pa., April 29, 1844, being a son of Joseph and Jane (Dodge) Riley, the former a native of New England, and the latter of Bradford County, Pa.  Joseph Riley was a son of Maj. Riley, of Connecticut, and Mrs. Riley v/as a daughter of Loren Dodge. To Mr. and Mrs. Riley a family of six children were born, of whom James O. was the second, five of the family being now alive. The father, who was a carpenter by trade, died in October, 1883, his wife dying in the month of January, 1887. When the subject of this sketch was eight years old his parents removed to Corning, Steuben County, N. Y., where his youth was spent. He learned the carpenter’s trade under his father, and followed this calling for a number of years.
At the age of seventeen he went to Tioga, Pa., from which place, about one year later, or in August, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Forty fifth Pennsylvania Volunteers, remaining with this company until the close of the war, participating in the battles of Hilton Head, Fredericksburg, South Mountain and Antietam, the siege and capture of Vicksburg, Petersburg and Jackson, in all of which he discharged his duties in a very creditable manner. From the war he returned to Tioga, Pa., but shortly after removed to Hornellsville, N. Y. , where he resided two years, employed in the repair shops of the New York & Erie Railroad. In 1868 he removed to Alton, Iowa, but after conducting a meat market there for one year he returned to York State and learned the painter’s trade while a resident of Wellsville. In 1872 he again came West, and this time settled in the State of Nebraska, residing one year in Lincoln, a short time in Harvard, and then took up a homestead claim fourteen miles northwest of Harvard, in Hamilton County, where he resided seven years, giving his attention to farming. Upon returning to Harvard, in 1881, he engaged in the grocery business, which occupation has since received his attention. His establishment is one of the leading groceries of the place, and he commands a large share of public favor.
He was married in Tioga County, Pa., August 16, 1860, to Miss Maggie L. Keeney, a daughter of Jesse and Sophronia M. (McArthur) Keeney, the former a native of Schenectady County, N. Y., born June 17, 1807, and the latter born in Vermont, .
The father of Mrs. Riley was the son of Thomas and Anna (Parshall) Keeney, and the mother was a daughter of Alexander and Rebecca (Wares) McArthur. Her parents were married in 1830, and had ten children, of whom she was the sixth, nine being now alive. The father died April 17, 1879, but the mother is still living, her home being in Mason City, Custer County, Neb. Mr. Riley is a member of the Masonic fraternity, in which he has taken the 32°, and he is also a member of the G. A. R. , the K. of P. and the A. O. U. W., being also a member of the Select Knights in the last named order. He has always been a stanch member of the Republican party, is an honorable, upright man, and is one of Clay County’s very best citizens. He possesses an extensive acquaintance, and by all who know him he is highly esteemed and respected.

Have been updating the Barkhamsted Lighthouse Research Book

I have been working non stop on the Barkhamsted Lighthouse linage’s – going thru each and every line to make sure I’ve covered them all.

I am at James B Barber the son of Hannah (Chagum) & Reuben Barber. I have just updated the research book in my research book area but will be putting out another one soon.

I create the books to be able to read them and fix the errors – I print them out then make my notes in them and then make corrections in my files – it let’s me see where work needs to be done. It is the main reason I created my research books area here on this blog – hated that only I seen the results of over 20 years of work.

As with merging files and doubling up on people there are many errors and much work to be done on several lines in my files . Daily I am in different lines – different directions – I work on them as I cross them to the best of my abilities~ You see any errors please let me know which research book and what page (PDF page not actual page – #’s are off)

I have many projects going on and am thrilled at the response we are getting on this blog – more and more are following me and my journey to find my Native American Roots~ One of the greatest joys is the family I am finding (or they are finding me lol) and coming on board and sharing photo’s/documents/records and such – our Facebook Group: Barkhamsted Lighthouse Village is truly taking off – have many lifetime family researchers in it and they are all helping to bring the story of the Lighthouse people to the public – I truly couldn’t have gotten this far without the help of so many family members sharing their work~

I have been adding as many notes and such as I can find – having to double check everything right now thou – so much has been lost and so much has been doubled up with the upgrading of software and merging of files – Main focus at this time is the Barkhamsted Lighthouse Tribe and all the descendants – I have worked my way from me to James B Barber so far and will be tackling Reuben and Hannah (pretty much have that all done along with James & Molly Chagum – keep it updated) Once I get thru these few more lines I will put out another research book – that would be the one you’d want to print – I recommend you take the printed copy to Office Depot and they will bind it for you for under $10.00 (I pay abt $7 in Louisiana to be done) Simple clear cover with black back cover and ring binding is all you need – the price is in your ink to print – you will need color to view all highlighted notes and can be costly – many of my books are in the hundreds page count~

I do want to note – I add a Coni’s Note: In my Research Books – when in need of a file or I’m needing more info – if you can help confirm or contribute a record it would be greatly appreciated~

Barkhamsted Lighthouse Family Reunion July 2nd-6th 2015

I have been wanting to do a family reunion for the descendants of the Barkhamsted Lighthouse Tribe – I have set a date with Paul Hart the President of the Barkhamsted Historical Society and Squires Tavern – we have decided on July 2nd-6th 2015~

I will be planning a few events – one is having Ken Feder show us his archeology work at the Lighthouse site along with “hopefully” getting a presentation out of him (still have to contact him on this)

I also will try and have Drew Shuptar Rayvis come and do a survival tour (will contact him to see if dates are ok – he has already agreed to do it for us) – he would show us all the plants and stuff our Native Americans would of used to survive on the land.

Paul Hart is willing to give us a tour of Chagum Lookout and other areas of Ragged Mountain (where our Ancestors lived)

They also do a parade in Barkhamsted on July 4th – Paul said we are all welcomed to join in!

They have fireworks in the next town over – few miles (abt 7) that we could do – not sure on ordinance of campground if allowed~

The also have a drive in theater – a great family night thing we could do – just down the road~

Hope MANY of the descendants will try and do this – would be awesome to meet many of you~

“The Cemetery Lady”

While in Michigan I had the pleasure of meeting Laurie Finerty – known all around Michigan as the “Cemetery Lady”~

After my presentation May 14th – I was introduced to Laurie and she accompanied us to a cemetery for a tombstone I was hunting down – we were unable to located it – she has offered to help me located a few I am needing – She travels all of Michigan to record as much of the cemeteries that she can – I can’t say thank you enough to her for her much needed help – we bonded in the small time we were together (would love to “just hang out” with her – such a hoot!) She owns a alpaca farm in Alger, MI and it has been shearing time for them – spoke with her yesterday and she has me on her to do list~ Can’t wait to see what she can uncover when I can’t find a thing! Excited~

Afterwards we took Laurie & Ron/Terry Allen to lunch – had a wonderful lunch at Ron’s daughter’s restaurant in Hale Michigan (across rd from Town Hall where I gave my presentation)- will have to get the name of it – excellent food and service! Highly recommend! Jay loved their “Cajun Pizza” !

I met so many wonderful and helpful people on this last trip – the response was unbelievable – many wanting to help and contribute~ It has been truly a blessing to be doing this research – I have met the best people and all are wanting to come on board and do all they can to help me on my journey~ I love what I am doing and will do it til I can’t no more~ I foresee many many years of “uncovering” more of my Ancestors stories~

To have “The Cemetery Lady” also on board to help with the much needed records of burials and death in Michigan is a big help to me – 1870-present Michigan is where my Fathers family was located/buried.

I am trying to do a “Find A Grave” project along with as much documentations on death and “medical” records on my lines also – been doing this for over 20 years now so have a extensive records/photo’s collection already~

I try to note my research books on documents needed – look for Coni’s Notes in my books:  here is where I put what is needed/where I left off /what I was doing on that line – I always highlight it in red.

Any help on locating these records would greatly be appreciated~

I have so much to still add – many to thank and much to write – just been very very very busy these past couple of months – ready to settle back into my lil corner of this world and start digging in to all the goodies I collected on my trips~

Been a crazy couple of months for me!

With my research trip to Michigan in May, a daughter graduating, a daughter getting married (and pregnant) and a trip to Beaumont TX – I am truly ready to get down to researching and locking my doors and become a hermit for 2 weeks! (Husband works offshore  – 2 weeks in/2 weeks out)

I have much info to add to my research and have added 2 new people to my research teamCheryl (Sheri) Church she descends from George Allen and Lydia Sutliff – his 1st wife – George Allen then married my Great Grandmother Ada Barber of the Barkhamsted Lighthouse Tribe – I do believe we also cross in a couple of other lines – she is helping me research George Allen’s lineage which is wonderful! I so needed help on that line!

I also have Pauline (Polly) & Jim Goodwin join my team – Polly descends from the Barber, Short and a couple of other lines also~ She is helping me get all the documents I need in the Michigan area along with helping me fill in several blanks I needed filled – they have done extensive work and have joined forces with me to get all the documentation and records needed to back up my research~ So happy to have them on board – spent some time with them while in Michigan – even open their homes to us~ Just love finding all my extended family – nothing but love been given~

I am truly excited where my research is leading me – a lot more of the story is falling into place for me! I am working on the 1850-1900’s right now and getting the last little bit of proof I was needing (reason for the Michigan trip) I have several Chiefs and lineages I will need to be adding to my files – much work to be done on this – but believe the Tonawanda Indian Tribe in New York are affiliated with the Barbers, Shorts and several other of my lineages~

I will have to plan another trip to Michigan (around October – want the changing of seasons) I also believe I am descending from the Saginaw Chippewa Tribes through my Grandmother – Campau – once again much work to be done on this but believe I found the connection~

Many Native American lines in my work are coming together – but I have to add many lines also – starting from scratch so will work on them as necessary in my research~

THANK YOU ALL!

I truly can’t thank you all enough for viewing my blog – it is daily growing in numbers – I am already at 11,125 views!
Thank you all for following my journey!  Please feel free to share this blogs – follow my Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest Boards also!
I wanted to note I will be super busy the next couple of weeks – My youngest daughter’s Boo’s wedding is on the 15th (have family coming in for it) Also we are going to TX Jaybird (Hubby) has a school – he has to attend 9th-14th
Looking forward to visiting Beaumont thou – Jaybird has to be in school all day and this gives me time to just take pictures – no genealogy – nobody but me and my new camera – can’t wait to  get out & abt with it (Canon Powershot SX50 HS – truly a AWESOME CAMERA! Mother’s day gift from Hubby – drowned my other one)
Deep in my soul – I mean deep – I’ve known I was a “Indian” – I grew up (all of us children) grew up KNOWING we had it in us – looking back at the way I was raised I can see a lot of the ways stayed in our family – what WE DIDN’T KNOW was how and why and where or what…….We were robbed of learning “the ways of our Ancestors” This research has changed my whole life~
As I see in my work I AM the PRODUCT of “Christianity”  along with the Fur Traders, the Dutch & English – all of it – My people were in the midst of it all – my people were the 1st to be indentured, enslaved (I have proof as young as the age of 3)  robbed of all they ever knew….. my heart bleeds at the tragic stories unfolding in my work… How I am here… amazes me….
I am a INDIAN, Native American, American Indian – the Red ManMY PEOPLE lived and died fighting their whole lives to protect their worlds, their earth, their families – ME ~
I know I descend from Royalty lines of many tribes that are considered “extinct” or not recognized – yet should be~
I also descend from many tribes that are recognized and “aren’t accepting” – yet I descend from deep bloodlines and to some that doesn’t matter? Well it matters to me….I was robbed of my heritage for 46 years…..They say we are extinct – I am here to tell you we are not!
I am not “affiliated/or have membership” of one tribe, work with as many as I can – I just want the root that lead to the branches of my family tree~ I want to meet my “Ever Widening Circle” of family – I want to learn the way of my people~
MY DNA can’t be taken from me~ My Ancestor’s blood runs through my veins~ I want the truth
I made a promise to my Father – I will continue my journey for the rest of my life – I will learn all I can – It is all he ever asked of me~
I’ve had a hard life – not much that has happened to a women hasn’t happened to me – I’ve been knocked down and out – but I got up and I continued on…. I grew stronger with every blow – I am not bitter for my past – I am thankful for those that tried to keep me down – I fought harder and grew stronger….It made me who I am today and I wouldn’t change a minute of my life~ Honestly~
As I see in my Ancestors before me…. they got back up and and they fought for what they believed in~
I am not scared to die….. I know there is a better place…. my Ancestors guide me now….
I am meant to do this …. this has been their plan for me all along ……… I believe I am their voice~
I have personally seen, felt and followed their guidance and it has lead me to all of this……so yes I know there is a better place~
Am I a 100% certain on my work ....NO….many and I MEAN MANY lines haven’t been worked on …I find changes all the time in my work… people connected to wrong people….I have tons of peoples work included in mine (still unchecked but added till I can get to them) lots of corrections I’m sure are needed, there is only one me and so much time I can do it all in…I try to research as much of a person as I can before I move on to the next – so if there is a lot of work then that person is researched if very little then lines I need to work on – but I am close! REALLY CLOSE~ I am up for any help – see a correction ‘let me know’ ~
I have abt 80% of all my lines done – almost 35,000 people in my research, daily adding new ones, deleting doubles – so yes I know it isn’t perfect, or professional let alone up to academic level – I am not school smart (believe I have a touch of ADHD)  I am just REALLY GOOD at DIGGING! I love research! I love to read  – I love to learn – I love my Ancestors~
Only way I am going to get this story out it is to get out and tell it!
Anyone wanting me to give a presentation – just email me at chagumdescendants@gmail.com
Jaybird is sitting here right now playing with my new amp he bought me- came with a wireless mic (full size) & sync’s with the box without any hook up – also bought the wireless microphone (one that pins to my shirt) can have 2 people on it at the same time!
It also has a iPod attachment – (gotta buy that now) so I can put all my Native American music on it and it can play at a touch of a button (love this feature) All and all the set up is awesome – perfect for what I want to do with this research!
I am so thankful for my wonderful husband – he has been the 1 true believer in me and has backed me all the way in all that I’ve needed…..I truly do believe he is a gift from the creator~ He has made the past 14 years of my life the best~
He has made sure I am fully set up to get out and tell my story!
It will be a couple of weeks before I am on here again~
Have a wonderful and safe summer~

Coni Dubois Hapogroup I1a1bUnderstanding Results: mtDNA (mitochondrial DNA)

Haplogroup – I1a1b
Haplogroup I is a descendant (subclade) of haplogroup N1e’I (Behar 2012b) and sibling of haplogroup N1e (Behar 2012b). It is believed to have arisen somewhere in Eurasia between 17,263 and 24,451 years before present (Behar 2012b). It has been suggested that its origin may be in northern Iran or in Europe towards the Carpathian Mountain region where its highest frequency is found (Terreros 2011). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haplogroup_I_%28mtDNA%29

Your Origin

Principally a European haplogroup, haplogroup I is detected at very low frequency across west Eurasia with slightly greater representation in northern and western Europe. Given its wide, but sparse, distribution, it is likely that it was present in those populations that first colonized Europe. This hypothesis is supported by the estimate its age—approximately 30,000 years.

Revised Cambridge Reference Sequence

Mutational events along the human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) phylogeny are traditionally identified relative to the revised Cambridge Reference Sequence (rCRS), a contemporary European sequence published in 1981. This historical choice is a continuous source of inconsistencies, misinterpretations and errors in medical, forensic and population genetic studies. Here, after having refined the human mtDNA phylogeny to an unprecedented level by adding information from 8,216 modern mitogenomes, we propose switching the reference to a Reconstructed Sapiens Reference Sequence (RSRS), which was identified by considering all available mitogenomes from Homo neanderthalensis. http://www.mtdnacommunity.org/default.aspx
