On front Page with President Obama

Coni Dubois on the front of Daily Comet July 25th, 2011 with President Obama

I was featured in the Daily Comet Newspaper out of Thibodaux Louisiana on July 25th 2011 and on the front page was an article on President Obama – I was truly honored to see my photo along beside his~

Just recently I was asked to do the unveiling of new trail signs at the Peoples State Forest in Barkhamsted Ct. at the Barkhamsted Lighthouse Site On Sept 10, 2011 – I am a descendant and leading genealogist of the people that lived on Ragged Mountain in Barkhamsted – The Hartford Stage coach used my families homestead as a marker and named it the Barkhamsted Lighthouse due to the campfires from the Indian Village and my people that resided there~ They lived on the mountain for around a hundred years – It was one of the last standing Native American Villages – many races at one time or the other was in the village – but the majority was the Chagum family and their descendants – Descendant of the Narragansett and Long Island Indians~

On Nov 15, 2011 the signs were spray painted with graffiti and terrible sayings~

Racial graffiti spray painted on sign at Barkhamsted historic site.

Vandalism at State Historic Site
Vandals struck a historic park in Barkhamsted.
A state historic site in Barkhamsted that recently received an face lift fell victim to vandals.
Someone spray painted the n-word as well as a male body part on the entrance sign to the Barkhamsted Lighthouse site. A rock was also defaced with the words expletive Obama. An anarchy symbol was also drawn.
Central Connecticut State University archaeologist Dr. Ken Feder, snapped photos of the vandalism.
“In truth, I was really angry,” Dr. Feder said.
The professor has conducted many digs at the site and has studied extensively about the people who once lived there.
Dr. Feder says the site is one of the first communities where mixed races lived together.
“These are just this interesting mixture of Native Americans, Euro-Americans, African Americans,” he said. “It’s really fascinating.”
It’s still unclear who may have done this and why.
The state owns the land.
A forest ranger started to clean up the paint Tuesday morning, but some of it still remains.
The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is looking in to the vandalism.
“There are a lot of people who are very upset and angry about this and they’re going to do all they can to find out who did this,” Dr. Feder said.

I’m tired of all this racial and unjust crap – My Native Americans were one of the 1st slaves of this country – they called it “SERVITUDE or INDENTURED” – I am still honored and proud to be on the front page with Obama – he is the 1st man “of color” to be our President and he had done as best as a job with what he has to deal with – To put this kind of crap on a historical area and to deface my families homestead – just breaks my heart – Ken Feder the leading Archeologist called me to let me know this happened – He sent me the photo’s of actual damage – can never be publish – so disgusting~
Peoples State Forest Officials are doing everything they can to try and repair the damage and to find those that did this – I know in my heart this was probably kids~

Had a wonderful trip!

I just recently got back from a trip to Connecticut & Rhode Island researching the Narragansett Tribe and the Chagum connection~
Had a wonderful time – was non-stop for my cousin Veronica and I the 5 days we were there~
Our 1st day we did the sightseeing under the guide of Keith Brown of  the Wiquapaug Pequot Tribe – My research lead me to this Tribe several years ago due to a book called A Man Called Sampson by Willis Ottery and his wife – in this book was a list made by Major Mason after the massacre of the Pequots – on this list in 1637 the Captives were divided into other Tribes and my Chagum Ancestor was given to the Wiquapaug Tribe – Keith Brown has been the one to answer all my questions and has been a great help in my research – We were honored to have him as our personal guide for the day~
Once we were done with our tour of the Narragansett Reservation – we were invited to the Chiefs house
(Keith’s brother “Chief Sunrise” Bryon & Pearl Brown) Whom had a delicious dinner prepared for us~
Veronica and I were graciously invited to stay the night – which we did~
I had a appointment the next day at the Narragansett Office – they didn’t want us to get a hotel since they lived so close~
Chief was willing to answer any questions I had during the time with them and helped me to understand more of my Native American Roots~
We had a wonderful time with them both – was sad to say goodbye~
I had a meeting at the Narragansett Lands Office with Lorraine Keyes who was very helpful and provided all I needed~
She even took us personally to the Sacred Royal Burial Grounds so that we could pay respect to those before us~
We then did some more sightseeing around the reservation – which we had to have permission thur the Security to do~
Our next day was our research day – I have tons and tons of legal documents coming to me (will take them some time to copy them for me)
Then we had the Archaeology Society of Connecticut meeting as special guest of the Society and Ken Feder~
Was a very productive and beautiful trip – always humbles me more when I find out about the lives of my Ancestors~

An Indian Romance – Published by West Bay City Times-Press March 30, 1900

An Indian Romance – Origin of the “Lighthouse Tribe” of Connecticut – unknown author

An Indian Romance – Published by West Bay City Times-Press  (Office: 512 Midland St West Bay City, Mich.)
Dated: March 30, 1900 Friday Evening (Donated by Ken Feder)
An Indian Romance – Origin of the “Lighthouse Tribe” of Connecticut – unknown author
Disappointment in love of a pretty Wethersfield girl and the pique of a Narragansett Indian from Long Island were procuctive of a piece of Connecticut history which is sometimes put down to myth. The last man to prove that it was not a myth died a few days ago. He was Sol Webster, male descendant of the Wethersfield girl, last of of some three hundred others who lived strange lives in the woods and hills around Barkhamsted.
The pretty white maiden, in the old Colonial days, had fallen in love with a young man in Wethersfield, Conn., but her father forbade her marrying him. Thereupon she took a vow that she would wed the first man who offered himself. About that time the Narragansett Indian, a brave named Chaugham, had left his tribe because of some injury to his reputation, and had come to live in Northern Connecticut. When he heard of the Wethersfield maiden, he hurried to her and offer his hand, which, according to her vow she accepted. Together they went to what is now Burkhamsted, and became the progenitors of a people who during this century have been known as the “Lighthouse Tribe”
It was in trying to learn how any people so far from the coast could get such a name that the romance was unearthed. The couple established their home on what is called Ragged Mountain, on the upper waters of the Tunxis, and years afterward the lights from their hut served as a landmark for the stage coaches which passed that way. Hence, it is said, the name “Lighthouse Tribe”
Changham and his wife brought up eight children. The pretty but willful Molly lived to be 105 years old, dying in the 1820, at which time she was known as Granny Chaugham. The halfbreeds flourished at the Lighthouse, a rough and roystering colony, for generations Their doings were many and strange, but actual crimes, such as that of the murdered Mossock, the exploits of whose halfbreed band gave the name Satan’s Kingdom to their resort, below New Hartford, were never lais at their door.
Eventually the began to degenerate through marrying among themselves and from other causes, and in their latter days were ” a band of bleached out, basket making, root gathering vagabonds.” Their cabins became fewer and more miserable, and at last the remanant of the tribe dispersed. One hut alone remained near the villiage of Riverton, a mile from the original Lighthouse, it was occupied by Old Sol Webster and his wife, who were, as far as known, the sole survivors of the family. Their poverty was extreme. The man said he was about eighty years old, but he looked much older. The women is several years younger. Both were lineal descendants of Changham’s daughters, but never were able to untangle their genealogies.  The old settlement is situated in a wild spot of great natural beauty.

Charlestown RI Trip coming up~

Will be putting stuff together for my trip this weekend – busy busy busy – I’m heading to Charlestown RI to the Narragansett Tribe next week for genealogy research – I have meetings set up that will be crucial in my research – I hope to connect a few dots that need to be done before I can truly go forward with this work – I’m in the 1700’s right now on the Grand Sachems of the New England Native Americans – one way or another ties in my blood line – Once I am able to connect lines then will work my way forward and start connecting all the Chagum descendants finally – hard to do with out knowing who’s who~ I will be leaving on the 11th and returning on the 16th~ More photo’s and videos will be taken while on this trip – have several sightseeing sites to see while in these areas also~

I was featured in the Wiquapaug Eastern Pequot News Letter ~

WIQUAPAUG EASTERN PEQUOT NEWS LETTER – THE “SUN RISE”
SEPTEMBER 2011 VOL.  13 – NO.  3
Keith Brown invited Coni Dubois and her family to the Tribal Gathering.
Coni drove here from Louisiana & the Hawkins family drove from Indiana.
(Veronica & Shane Hawkins with their 2 boys and friend)
Coni took many videos of the dances that were performed and posted them on her websites.  She posted that her favorite dance was the Blanket Dance.
You can view her blog at: https://conidubois.wordpress.com/
All her videos from her trips along with the Wiquapaug dances can be found at: https://conidubois.wordpress.com/videos/
Coni enjoyed learning about the culture of her ancestors and expressed what an honor it was for her to have been invited to the Tribal Gathering and to be invited into the Welcoming Circle.  She has been researching her family genealogy for the past 18 years and has traced her ancestry back to the Algonquian, Mohegan, Pequot and Narragansett tribes. Her main research focus is on James Chagum a Long Island Native American that married a Narragansett, along with his descendants that settled in Barkhamsted, CT.
Coni just recently took part in a ceremony for the unveiling of the Lighthouse Trail on Ragged Mountain in Barkhamsted CT on Sept 15th along with a unveiling June 26th, 2011 on Block Island RI for the Ancestral/Descendant Stone for the the Native Americans that once lived on the island (Manissean Indians along with Narragansett.)
Coni’s Blog gives the following insights on her background:
I’ve been a family genealogist for 18+ years and have traced over 17,000 people for my family tree (Mother & Father’s sides) – I’m the head Genealogist for the Barkhamsted Lighthouse Native American Tribe in Barkhamsted Connecticut and a true descendant of the Chagum / Barber line~ I’m working closely with several Archaeologist, Historians, Historical Societies, genealogist, family member’s and Author’s on the Chagum’s and the Grand Sachems of the New England Indians – I will be blogging about my research and the paths I’ve had to follow – I have traveled extensively to NY, CT, RI and of course Block Island in my quest to trace my Ancestor’s – the Chagum bloodline has been shed in several Wars – We have them put into servitude and slavery Block Island – There are two ponds named after them on Block Island –Sachem/Chagum Pond & Lil Choggin Pond  – in the late 1700′s the story continues to James Chagum (2nd) who is Chief of the Barkhamsted Lighthouse Village to early 1800′s~
I can go on and on – have thousands of documents to back up this research – Now I’m ready to tell the wonderful story –    I’ve got the bases done on this line now it’s time to fill in the blanks and and connect the Ever Widening Circle of families~
“I’m not much of a writer – but great at researching – so excuse any mistakes”

Miss you Dad~

Rex Allen 2/5/49 – 9/15/10 with my Mother Nancy (Gilbert)
Taken 1966 just before I was born~

Today has been hard for me – a year ago today he passed away~
My Dad was a hard man –
had a strong personality –
But he was always there for me –
I knew my Dad could fix anything –
no matter the situation ~
I knew he loved me in his own way
even thou he wasn’t much on affection~
He taught me to stand on my own 2 feet~
He taught me to have strength in any circumstance~
He taught me to be a survivor~
He taught me to believe in myself~
He taught me the real meaning of family
He is missed – but know he is with my Ancestors~
All this is because of him and a request –
My research has changed me – humbled me~
With that I’m forever grateful~
I not only mourn my father today –
I mourn for all that have gone before me~
I only hope to honor them and the man I call Father~
